Everywhere I looked, I found stakes races on Saturday, so I picked the three best tracks with the most stakes races and worked their statistics like a part-time job.

TermsSaturday

I went with Fair Grounds Race Course, Gulfstream Park, and Tampa Bay Downs, which together produced a baker’s dozen of stakes races for me to review for Saturday.

So let’s not waste any more time — let’s get right to the summary of my horse racing picks for Saturday, January 16, 2021.

Good luck!

  • Race 3: Archidust 7/2 (win)
  • Race 3: Went West 12/1 (show)
  • Race 9: Room to Finish 8/1 (win)
  • Race 10: Wells Bayou 3/1 (win)
  • Race 10: Grand Luwegee 20/1 (show)
  • Race 11: Sailing Solo 9/2 (win)
  • Race 12: Sun Path 2/1 (win)
  • Race 13: Proxy 6/1 (win)
  • Race 13: Red N Wild 20/1 (show)

Fair Grounds gave us plenty of underdog and longshot action with six stakes races on the card for Saturday, including the Grade III Louisiana Stakes and the Lecomte Stakes, both Grade III stakes races.

I found underdogs to tout in races 9, 11, and 13, and there were even plenty of longshot value show bets to be made (races 3, 10, and 13).

Saturday’s Predictions for Gulfstream Park

  • Race 9: Noble Drama 7/5 (win)
  • Race 9: Scar 20/1 (show)
  • Race 10: Extravagant Kid 7/5 (win)
  • Race 10: Heiressall 20/1 (show)
  • Race 11: Monforte 9/2 (win)

Gulfstream Park brought us four of the Sunshine series of stakes races, and I reviewed all four of them for our wagering pleasure and profit.

I found three (count ‘em — three!) 20/1 longshots with real chances at finishing in the money, so everything else is just gravy — which is good since I found only one underdog (race 11) and wound up backing the morning line favorites in the other three stakes races.

Demystify the process behind my predictions for all four of the stakes races at Gulfstream Park.

My Saturday Predictions for Tampa Bay Downs

Horse
  • Race 6: Big Rings 5/2 (win)
  • Race 6: Marketability 12/1 (show)
  • Race 7: Thealligatorhunter 6/1 (win)
  • Race 9: Lucky Stride 2/1 (win)

Horse Racing Best Bets Of The Week: 2021 Tropical Turf Stakes ...

Tampa Bay Downs had the least number of opportunities for profit, but only in comparison to the other two tracks, which frankly were pretty darned generous. In any case, the track yielded up two underdogs and a solid show bet in three races — which is actually a better-than-average effort, according to my records.

I found a second-favored in race 6 (aka the Gasparilla Stakes) and a 6/1 fourth-favored entry in race 7 (the Pasco Stakes), although I ended up agreeing with the morning line on the probable winner of race 9 (the Wayward Lass Stakes).

And then there was that 12/1 value show bet in race 6. Sure, we won’t make a lot of money there, but profit, however slight, is better than loss.

With the meeting at Huntingdon now abandoned, our betting expert bids to bolster the weekend’s betting coffers with two selections on the all-weather.

This horse showed his best form for a while (under crack apprentice Laura Pearson) last time and, although he never won a race last season, he regularly ran to an okay level.

Horse

Dropped 22lbs since his last win, his turn is certainly due and a better break from the stalls would have seen him score on his latest start. Trainer Alexandra Dunn needs a winner, but most of her runners have been 66-1 shots recently and those with form have performed with credit.

The penalty for his victory here last week is offset by the 7lbs claimed by George Bass, a jockey who I have highlighted before. Richard Fahey is perhaps the biggest name trainer Bass has ridden for and it is a big feather in the cap for the young apprentice.

Star of St James is in his element on Fibresand and his front-running style is well suited to the track. He bolted up from an in-form rival here last time in a 0-80 handicap and, down to the 0-70 grade now, he can’t be opposed despite a couple of in-form rivals.
