One of the best DOS games ever? Probably! Released as the long-awaited follow up to iD Software's classic DOOM, Quake had high expectations. In most ways, I think it met them. Or at least it met mine. It added fully 3D levels, cool new weapons and enemies, and ultra-fast frantic gameplay. And a lot of the color brown. I have spent many hours playing this classic, and still go back to play it sometimes. If you have never played it ... get it now! With the release of Quake, iD Software once again revolutionized the 3D shooting genre. It's great, even today!

Quake, #23. Added to website: 2017-10-24. All copyrights, trademarks, etc, are property of their respective holders.

So, guys, what do you remember most for 1996? I can not hear! What? Did you go to school this year? And more? Who from the last rows shouted 'graphic revolution'? You are absolutely right! But this is not all that we remember this year, because the graphic revolution occurred simultaneously with the release of the cult game Quake! Carmack and his team, which once struck us with Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth, repeated their success, but this time in a new format. Now the world around us is absolutely, honestly three-dimensional.

If earlier we had some 2.5D, now you will see the game world as absolutely real. However, not one graphics rich. Carmack could easily make the usual stupid action with a cool engine, cut off the portion of kilobax put to him and dump on the Canary Islands to rest, but he would not be himself if he did so. The whole id team develops shooters at such a high level that it simply considers it unworthy to lower the bar.

Why is Quake so good? First, the gameplay just breaks off the roof: after going through a couple of levels on Hard, you can no longer stop. Secondly, as mentioned above, the graphics in the game are quite spectacular. In addition, there are currently projects that aim to bring the graphic design of this game to a much more modern level. I know only two similar projects - FuhQuake and Tenebrae. The second one has a more advanced graphics system, but its requirements are higher. Third, id has already become a good tradition to include advanced multiplayer. A lot of mocking monsters in the single, many players are switching to multiplayer. The fundamentals of this direction, laid back in Doom, have not changed. The familiar Deathmatch will give you and your rivals a lot of tense minutes and adrenaline in the blood.

Quake is no longer a game, it’s a whole cult. Time has shown that this game is more than worthy of attention.
